Deep Tissue Massage is a massage technique designed to relieve severe tension in the muscles, connective tissue and fascia.
It focuses on the deeper layers of the muscles, treats particular muscular-skeletal disorders and complaints, and employs a dedicated set of techniques and strokes to achieve a measure of relief.
Deep Tissue Massage works by physically breaking down adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement. It uses direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles. It loosens the muscles, releases toxins and aids blood and oxygen circulation as well as helping to break up and eliminate scar tissue. When muscles are in an acute state of stress, the fibers shorten, restricting movement. Deep Tissue Massage reaches those deeper muscles giving a greater sense of release and range of movement, and further allows the spine and joints to relax into alignment.
It is often recommended for those who experience consistent pain, are involved in heavy physical activity, sustain repetitive postures (driving, sitting at the desk) or who have sustained physical injury. It uses slow strokes and deep finger hand and forearm pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the fibers of the muscles as well as some stretching. There is usually some stiffness or pain after a deep tissue massage, but this should subside within a day or so.
