New to Yoga? A Guide to Getting Started
At The Life Centre, we’ve been welcoming people new to yoga for over 30 years, and one thing has remained consistent throughout that time: there is no single way to begin.
Starting yoga for the first time can feel daunting. You might wonder if you’re flexible enough, whether you’ll know what to do, or if you’ll fit in. Yoga is not a performance, nor a linear path, it is a practice that adapts to different bodies, life stages, and needs - and the right starting point is simply the one that feels most supportive.

Where to begin
If you’re new or returning after a break, we suggest starting with some of our slower, gentle classes, that allow time to become familiar with basic postures, and explore breath and awareness without pressure:
- Gentle Yoga with Yoga Nidra
- Hatha Yoga
- Restorative Yoga & Meditation
- Yoga Basics
- Yoga with Deep Stretch
- Yoga Flow
- Yoga & Hypno-Nidra
- Yoga & Somatic for Calm
Pregnancy Yoga, Mat Pilates, and Qi Gong, are also suitable for beginners and offer supportive ways to build strength and body awareness.
While most classes are open-level, we recommend waiting before attending more dynamic styles such as Ashtanga, Fit Flow, Vinyasa, Rocketbeats, Soulful Flow, Kundalini, or Intermediate Yoga. If you’re unsure, our reception team can help guide you, and you’re always welcome to let the teacher know of any injuries or concerns before class.

What to Expect
Our classes are welcoming and calm, ranging from restorative to gently energising. Rest is always encouraged when needed, and there is no expectation to keep up with anyone else. Yoga can be particularly helpful for stiffness, tension, or recovery - the key is choosing the right class and moving at your own pace.
Our teachers do offer hand-on adjustments, but if you would prefer not be adjusted - just let them know before class start time.
Classes are open to men and women aged 16+, and our community includes a wide range of ages and experience levels. Whether you come to meet like-minded people, to move and breathe, or simply to find a moment of quiet, you are welcome

Our Studio
Based in Notting Hill Gate since 1993, The Life Centre is a light-filled, sanctuary created to support wellbeing and reflection. The main studio is a spacious, open room with original wooden beams, skylights, and underfloor heating, offering a calm and airy space for practise. Upstairs our smaller Loft Studio provides a more intimate setting, with beautiful views of sunrise and sunset during early morning and late afternoon classes.
All mats and props are provided. We also offer changing rooms, lockers, and showers, with towels available to rent. You’re very welcome to bring your own mat if you prefer, and mats can also be purchased at the studio. Students are welcome to enjoy fresh water from our fountain and complimentary herbal tea.

Booking & Arrival:
Classes can be booked online via Mindbody, or through The Life Centre App.
Our cancellation policy is 2 hours before class. For your first visit, we recommend arriving 10–15 minutes early to settle in and ask any questions.
A Welcoming Community:
Our friendly reception team is always on hand to help - many are teachers or long-standing practitioners themselves. Over the years, The Life Centre has grown into a diverse and supportive community, welcoming students at every stage of life.
If you’re new to yoga, we hope this gives you a clear place to start – and we look forward to practising with you.
